The 29-year-old Allen was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022 but had a rather disappointing 2023 season. That happened at the same time that defensive-minded Dan Quinn was hired as Washington’s next head coach and Adam Peters later succeeded him as general manager.
This has given rise to some conjecture that the Commanders may decide to trade the talented defensive lineman as opposed to offering him a high-paying long-term contract extension.
Rumors that Allen might not stay in Maryland for long intensified after Washington selected fellow defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Currently, he is engaged in play under a $72 million, four-year contract that expires in 2025. Daron Payne, a defensive tackle with the Commanders, earns $22.5 million a year from his contract, therefore the NFL pay cap becomes a factor.
Jonathan Allen’s numbers include 39.0 sacks, 57 tackles for loss, and 111 QB hits.
As you can see, over his seven-year tenure with the Commanders, Allen has been extremely productive. Other team officials are publicly speculating on whether Washington will move him or face the bullet.
According to the sources ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke with recently, “Washington will need to either rework his contract eventually or decide whether it will entertain trade interest, which it has rebuffed in the past.”
