North Carolina got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, as a bases loaded walk followed by a Notre Dame fielding error put three runs on the board for the team in Carolina blue.
Regretfully, the Fighting Irish rallied, cutting the Tar Heels’ advantage to 3-2 going into the fifth inning after two consecutive solo home runs.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Tar Heels would cut the deficit to two runs, but that was when things went south for the Tar Heels, as Notre Dame scored five runs in the sixth to grab a commanding lead.
The Tar Heels ended the 2024 season with a 30-20 record after losing four straight conference games, which is a regrettable way for Megan Smith Lyon’s debut season to end. The accomplishment this club achieved over the season shouldn’t be diminished by its conclusion because they have a very promising future ahead of them.
The offseason will now take center stage, and we’ll have to wait and watch what Smith Lyon can put together for the roster of the next season. Although there are some voids to be filled, Smith Lyon and the Tar Heels should be quite active as they try to build on the talent she brought in last season.
