This summer, Celtic is anticipated to be searching for one or more goalkeepers. The Hoops will be without its top goalie for three seasons since Joe Hart has already declared his intention to retire at the end of the current season. However, Benjamin Siegrist’s future at Parkhead is also in doubt because he hasn’t played much since joining in 2022.
Naturally, in recent months, Celtic has been connected to several goalkeepers. And now it appears that they are also aiming for a veteran.
According to the Daily Mail (via Sky Sports), Alex McCarthy of Southampton is becoming more and more of a summertime option for Celtic. He’s also being linked to Newcastle United and Liverpool.
McCarthy was not in Southampton’s starting lineup for the most of the season. However, in the past month, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has been starting for the team as they attempt to return to the Premier League and advance through the Championship playoffs.
This summer, Celtic hopes to sign a transfer target from Liverpool.
McCarthy’s career has been somewhat of a journeyman, with stints at several clubs around England. Is it possible that he will move up north soon? It’s thought that his current contract will expire in the summer.
It is difficult to think that McCarthy replacing Hart would satisfy Celtic supporters. especially in light of the fact that they have been connected to more well-known figures and those who might stay at Parkhead for a long time.
McCarthy is a respectable goalie, of course. He’s played in the Premier League for a long time and has even earned a cap for England. But he might not be Celtic’s best option at this point in his career.
