SO SAD: Astros Owner ‘Jim Crane’ Terminate Yordan Álvarez Contract Insisting That He…

There are reports that this is the largest contract ever for a designated hitter and that it will pay him $26 million annually during the free agent seasons. After Mike Trout’s six-year, $144.5 million contract, Buster Posey’s eight-year, $159 million deal, Wander Franco’s 11-year, $182 million extension, and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 14-year, $340 million pact, the deal is the fifth richest for a player who has not yet reached arbitration.

Álvarez, who was the clear winner of the 2019 Rookie of the Year Award, only participated in two games in 2020 due to surgery on his left knee and repair of a ruptured patellar tendon on his right knee.

Álvarez, 24, had a fantastic postseason after setting career highs with 33 home runs and 104 RBIs in the 2021 regular season. After hitting 12-for-23, including a 4-for-4 showing in the series-clinching Game 6 that sent the Astros over the Boston Red Sox and into the World Series, he was awarded the ALCS MVP.
