Virginia Tech and Mike Young received a commitment from Duke guard Jaden Schutt on Saturday.
He joins Temple guard Hysier Miller, Cal guard Rodney Brown Jr., Charleston forward Ben Burnham, and VCU forward Toibu Lawal as the Hokies’ sixth offseason transfer portal pledge. Joining three high school standouts in guard Ben Hammond, forwards Ryan Jones Jr. and Tyler Johnson, and center Schutt is the eighth overall selection.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound redshirt sophomore played for the Blue Devils for two seasons. In 14 games as a rookie in 2022–2023 he scored 2.1 points on average and made seven of his twenty three-point tries. He redshirted and had surgery on his left knee after playing in an exhibition game against UNC Pembroke on November 1, 2023, before the start of his sophomore year, where he went 2-of-5 from deep in 12 minutes.
Schutt, a Yorkville, Illinois native, ranked four stars and among the top 75 prospects in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports Composite. His offers from Creighton, DePaul, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Wisconsin, Xavier, and other universities came after he graduated from Yorkville Christian High School.
Upon his entry into the transfer portal on April 15, a number of those universities expressed interest, in addition to Butler, Dayton, Georgia, Oregon, and Notre Dame.
