Don Cherry is not going to concede that his critique of the Carolina Hurricanes, who are now in the NHL playoffs’ Eastern Conference final, was incorrect. The Hurricanes celebrated their victories with the amusing and delicious “Storm Surge” post-win celebrations.
Recall that Cherry criticized the Hurricanes in February, labeling the team’s celebratory players “jerks,” after witnessing the team delight fans with Duck, Duck Goose games, slam dunks, human dominoes, and more. The Carolina Hurricanes handled the label well, adopting it in their arena, tweets, and T-shirts prior to Game 3 of their series against the New York Islanders.
Cherry continues to insist when questioned about how his remarks have turned into a “jerks phenomenon”:
“I don’t embrace nothing! I said they look like a bunch of jerks being fish in the water, a bowling ball. … It came down from the top, ‘I want to entertain the fans.’ The fans there now, the 17 or 18 thousand are front-runners, they’re there because they win, not because they act like fish.”
