The rivalry that persists and dates back centuries is the one involving Florida Football supporters and recruiting rankings. Last season, we witnessed a number of important commits for the Gators not receive the attention that many felt they deserved, and revisions to the off-season rankings only seemed to confirm rumors that recruiting services despise Florida.
A closer look at the data will reveal whether or not these services are biased against the Gators, but one thing that is undeniable is how absurd some of the rating fluctuations are when there isn’t any actual football being played.
Football in Florida: Will I Be
On Saturday, Will Griffin made his commitment to Florida. Consensus places the Tampa Jesuit four-star quarterback among the top 150 prospects and the top 10 overall in the class of 2026.
We contended that Griffin is a top-100 overall talent in our profile from last week. His skills on the film translate well in a real game, but they might not transfer to a 7-on-7 camp, which is why the off-season ranking changes are so unpredictable each year.
As expected, when Rivals released their most recent rankings, the player who had been placed 103rd after seeing every movie from 2023 slipped to 149th place.
Not just Griffin experienced an extreme fluctuation in his rating. Jamarrion Gordon, an Alabama commit, fell 97 spots in the Rivals update. Regarding Griffin, it seems like his spring game consisted of getting dropped. Lakeland defeated Tampa Jesuit 37 to 3.
However, the way these businesses operate, they will discard a whole body of work from the actual season due to an incident that occurs at a camp or scrimmage. The real players then emerge and the camp superstars are exposed for what they really are once the pads are put back on for real in the fall.
