Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator, and Christian Wilkins were two key defensive losses for the Miami Dolphins this summer. While some exits were glad to see go, others were a bigger loss that threw the franchise’s defense into the deep end.
Creating a new identity for a Dolphins team with an infusion of rookies is a big assignment for new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. Players have praised Weaver so far, pointing out that the scheme by itself was significantly more enjoyable.
Weaver told reporters at the Dolphins’ required minicamp that his mindset is centered around production. “I told them that production is equal to time plus energy.” You simply won’t be that productive if you put in the time and do it without enthusiasm. You’ll make the most of your day if you mix the two—you’re coming here anyhow—and bring some juice.
Regarding his new defense, the former defensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens is all praise. Weaver clarified that his flawless production formula hardly required instruction.
“Fortunately, we have a lot of guys on this team, particularly defensively, that have that naturally. It’s innate in them, and then the guys that sometimes lack that, they bring them along with them. I just love being around the guys in general, just because of their work ethic and habits. So for me, maybe they think that comes from me. Shoot, I’m feeding off of them.”
