Jer’Zhan Newton was selected by the Washington Commanders in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Newton, who was thought to have potential this season, had foot surgery this offseason. Prior to the Commanders’ three-day minicamp, head coach Dan Quinn stated that Newton is “hitting all the markers.”
On June 11, Quinn informed reporters that “he’s hitting all the markers that he’s supposed to hit.” He is capable of doing mild exercise. Then, we’ll continue working on that until training camp; but, there have been no decisions made regarding when camp will begin or not. We’ll therefore proceed week by week, but he is hitting all the appropriate milestones.

Newton will get to compete against two of the best pass rushers in the NFL, Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen. By selecting Newton in the draft, the Washington Commanders added a guy who could pressure the quarterback and grow alongside their two stars.
Newton told Commanders senior writer Zach Selby that he was “really happy” to be playing next to them after being selected with the 36th overall choice in the draft.
