The Pacers are in an interesting spot this season. After making the Eastern Conference Finals, they are trying to figure out what configuration will get them to the NBA Finals. How can they improve themselves the most? Do they need to make a trade? Or is free agency the best way to do it?
Indiana has some trade assets that it can use to improve the team. Free agency is a bit trickier because of the cap issues that they face with an owner who doesn’t like to spend. One of the primary trade assets that they would have this offseason is T.J. McConnell
McConnell just finished his best season as a player, and his contract is about to expire. He was the Pacers’ bench unit leader, and he was sought after by other clubs in the league. A new piece of evidence suggests that they may not have a chance to trade for him either.
The Pacers are attempting to extend T.J. McConnell’s contract.
Shams Charania claims that the Pacers are attempting to extend McConnell’s contract on Pat McAfee’s show. In a radio interview, Chad Buchannan expressed the desire to retain him for the remainder of his career, but it appears that they are genuinely taking steps to extend his stay.
If he returns, Indiana will have a well-liked point guard who also serves as a team leader. He appears to have a few more years to play at his peak level before this club can seriously challenge. He is also adored by the fans.
After McConnell receives the extension, will they be able to sign and move him? In theory. Do I think that will occur? No, I don’t. To make it more appealing for another team, they would simply leave it as an expiring deal if they were going to trade him. Likely, he will remain in Indianapolis.
