American professional softball player Jocelyn Aloha Pumehana Alo (born September 23, 1998) plays for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Women’s Professional Fastpitch (WPF). She was an Oklahoma Sooners collegiate softball player. In addition to winning the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award in 2021 and 2022, Alo was named the 2018 NFCA National Freshman of the Year. She leads the NCAA Division I in home runs during her career.[1] In the first-ever WPF draft, Alo was selected first overall by the Smash It Vipers.
Alo went to James Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, where she was the team captain for three state titles and twice won the Gatorade State High School Player of the Year award. She also won the 184-pound HHSAA girls state wrestling championship in 2015. After her sophomore year, she gave up on the sport of wrestling.[2][3] She had an eight-home homer season, thirty RBI, thirteen runs scored, and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 1.726 while hitting.612 in her junior year. She went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in the 2016 championship game, earning her the title of Most Outstanding Player of the competition. Additionally, she was selected to the first team of the All-Oahu Interscholastic Association.[4] In 2017, she hit.571 as a senior with 12Alo started all 62 games in 2018 as a rookie (23 in left field and 39 as a designated player). She led the squad in batting average (.420), home runs (30), RBIs (72), total bases (170), slugging (.977), on-base percentage (.549), walks (14) and home runs per game (0.48). She also topped the country in these categories. At the end of the season, she was rated second in the country in total bases (159), RBIs (72), slugging percentage (.970), and RBI per game (1.20). Her 30 home runs tied the single-season records held by Oklahoma, the Big 12, and the NCAA Division I freshman record.[1][5] She was voted NFCA National Freshman of the Year, Big after an incredible season.Alo started 59 games in her sophomore season of 2019 (56 in right field and three as a designated player). She tied for the team lead in RBIs (56), came in second in hits (66), and had an on-base percentage (.484) that was good. She was chosen to the first team of the All-Big 12 after the season.[8] Alo started all 24 games for the Sooners in her junior year of 2020, both as a designated player and across the outfield, in a season that was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She concluded the season with a slash line of.427/.813/.506 along with a team-high 61 total bases and 12 walks, eight home runs, 21 RBIs, and 22 runs. She ranked first in career hitting average (.404) and third in slugging at the end of the 2020 season.
Alo won the title of Big 12 Player of the Week for the week ending March 16, 2021, during her senior year in 2021. Alo blasted six home runs last week in Oklahoma’s five games, finishing 7-for-17 with 10 RBIs and 25 total bases. She had a 1.471 slugging percentage and hit.412.[9] For the week ending March 30, 2021, Alo was once more selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week. She had a slash line of.800/.917/2.400 at the end of the weekend, along with two home runs, four extra-base hits, and seven RBI. Despite walking seven times during her twelve plate appearances, she managed to finish 4-for-5 and collect a total of 12 bases.[10]
Alo tied the NCAA record with her 95th career home run on February 20, 2022.[18] She broke Lauren Chamberlain’s previous record when she hit her 96th career home run on March 11, 2022, during the Rainbow Wahine Classic in her home state of Hawaii.[19][20] With a.476 batting average, 24 home runs, 11 doubles, and 61 RBIs—including two grand slams—by the end of the regular season, she was quite successful. She ranked second in batting average (.512) and RBIs (85), but she topped the country in home runs (34), slugging percentage (1.212), and on-base percentage (.646). She was again voted Big 12 Player of the Year, USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, and Softball America Player of the Year after an incredible season;[21][22][23][24]
