In Oregon, world champion Noah Lyles won the 200 meters in a time of 19.53 seconds, setting a new record for the US Olympic trials.
The 26-year-old overcame a late lead to defeat opponent Kenny Bednarek by 0.06 seconds, having won the 100-meter trials the previous weekend.
Prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Michael Johnson set a record in the US Olympic trials, which Lyles’ time—the fastest 200m in 2024 thus far—beat.
Lyles, who placed third at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, stated that his enhanced mental well-being will be beneficial in his pursuit of the sprint double in Paris.
“I’ve said it all season but it helps to not have depression,” Lyles stated.
“Every day, I give thanks to God for seeing me through every challenge. both physically and mentally sound.”
Gabby Thomas, meanwhile, won the women’s 200-meter race in 21.81, which is the second-fastest time of the year thus far.
Like Lyles, 27-year-old Thomas is targeting gold in the 100 and 200 meters in Paris after winning bronze in Tokyo.
Her words, “I’m just ecstatic,” “It’s just such an amazing race.”
Sha’Carri Richardson’s dreams of competing in the 200m in France were dashed as she finished fourth.
Despite having a great start throughout the first 40 meters, Richardson, who won the 100-meter trials last week, lost to Thomas, Brittany Brown, and McKenzie Long on Saturday.
