In the street race held in downtown Chicago for the NASCAR Cup Series, Kyle Larson emerged victorious over Ty Gibbs with a mere hundredth of a second.
In the second qualifying session on Saturday, Larson clocked a fast lap of 87.836 seconds on the 2.2-mile, 12-turn course, with a peak speed of 90.168 mph. At 90.158 mph and 87.846 seconds, Gibbs came in second.
In his 350th career Cup Series start, Larson is aiming for his fourth victory of the year. The driver for Hendrick Motorsports has 21 career poles to his five this year.
Leading the Cup Series, Larson stated, “This year, qualifying—I mean, racing, too—has been a strong suit. But qualifying, we’ve been able to execute and get five poles so far.”
“We’re in for a battle tomorrow,” McDowell stated, “and we’ve got a fast car and a good opportunity to try to execute and put ourselves in position to win.”
In practice, Larson’s car was the fastest as well. In the first race a year ago, he came in fourth.
Larson finished third in the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, preparing for his Cup Series debut on the challenging, new course. Van Gisbergen prevailed, with Ty Gibbs coming in second.
In what may have been a foreshadowing for Sunday, Larson and van Gisbergen battled throughout the opening stage of the Xfinity Series race.
