Seattle Mariners defeated Houston Astros 2-1 on Wednesday night thanks to a sacrifice fly by J.P. Crawford that enabled Jonatan Clase to score the game-winning run.
The starting pitchers for both teams—George Kirby of Seattle and Justin Verlander of Houston—put on excellent performances, and the game was all about pitching. In seven innings, Verlander only gave up one run and three hits, striking out nine, while Kirby gave up one run, six hits, and eight strikeouts in six innings.
The pitching match between Verlander and Kirby was complimented by Seattle manager Scott Servais, who called it “excellent baseball.”
The Mariners’ relievers struck out six batters in three innings while giving up just one run, demonstrating the durability of the bullpens. In the tenth inning, Mike Baumann retired the Astros in order.
But in the tenth inning, Houston’s Tayler Scott faltered, enabling Dominic Canzone to ground out and moving Clase to third base. Crawford hit a deep fly ball with the bases loaded, which gave Clase the opportunity to score the game-winning run.
Crawford highlighted the significance of finishing the job and expressed relief at not losing the chance to score the winning run.
Seattle had a chance to win the game in the ninth inning, but Ryan Bliss and Mitch Haniger struck out Julio Rodríguez, leaving him stranded at third base.
The only imperfection in Verlander’s performance was Canzone’s fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning. Even though the ball had a hard time traveling due to the cold, Canzone’s home run was estimated to have traveled 408 feet.
