In his quest to guide Macclesfield to promotion the next season, Michael Clegg is willing to go above and beyond.
Since emerging from the ashes of Macclesfield Town less than four years ago, the Silkmen have been aiming for three consecutive promotions.
But in the NPL Premier play-off final, they lost 2-1 at home to Marine, shattering their dreams of advancing directly to the National League North.
The objective, according to Clegg, who took over as the new team’s sixth manager in February, must be to win the championship in 2024–25 and stay out of the play-off lottery.
He declared, “There are some good teams in this league who will spend money.” “We need to make sure that we hire people more effectively than anyone else.
“I am in charge of that and I’ll exert every effort necessary to help us win the league.”
Clegg went on, “We can’t sit and sulk but will lick our wounds and make sure we are better equipped next season,” adding that they won’t wallow in their play-off loss.
“Our recruitment drive is in full swing, and we identified players had we gone up and also if we stayed in this division.”
Clegg cut loose 11 players from a roster he felt was too big.
There weren’t too many surprises, in my opinion. We intend to add six or seven more players,” he clarified.
