Aston Villa has began preparations to improve their squad this summer in anticipation of their first-ever return to Europe’s top club competition since 1983. They have initiated the necessary procedures in an attempt to capture Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.
Since joining the Villains in the Midlands in 2022, Unai Emery has been a sensation. After leading the team to their best-ever result in his rookie campaign, the Spaniard produced UEFA Champions League football this season with an incredible top-four victory. Villa has begun to identify possible targets and is now required to make plans for life among the wealthy.
Guendouzi, who was an Arsenal player under Emery, has reportedly started initial talks with the club, according to Football Insider.
Unai Emery and Matteo Guendouzi Might Get Back Together This Summer
One of Emery’s first acquisitions for the Gunners after taking over as manager in place of longtime boss Arsene Wenger was the 25-year-old French midfielder. The ‘tough’ midfielder Guendouzi played 82 games for Arsenal in two years under both Mikel Arteta and Emery before going on loan to Hertha Berlin and Marseille.
He earned his debut for France’s national team under Didier Deschamps while he was at Marseille, and he has since made eight appearances for his country. He became a regular Marseille player in 2022 and played 103 games for the Ligue 1 team before joining Lazio on another loan.
Guendouzi, who was rated ninth by GIVEMESPORT among Emery’s acquisitions in North London, is someone Emery is eager to get back together with and find a long-term home for at Villa Park. It is believed that Guendouzi and Aston Villa have a past together. Earlier in Emery’s career, in January 2023, Guendouzi was on the verge of joining the team before he ultimately relocated to Italy.
Although Guendouzi has never played in the Champions League, Villa is expected to be in the driver’s seat to sign him given Emery’s relationship with the midfield player and the fact that Newcastle United is also rumored to be monitoring the player in an attempt to find bargain deals.
