Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium is undergoing a multi-phase renovation, with Phase II focusing on the west and north sections of the lower bowl, including modern seating, sightlines, and upgrades to amenities like restrooms and concessions, and Phase III planned to complete the project.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the stadium renovation:
Phase I (Completed):
This phase focused on the south end zone, creating a new student section with dedicated entrances, seating, and standing areas, enhanced concessions, and a continuous concrete lower seating bowl.
Phase II (Underway):
This phase involved demolishing and reconstructing the west and north sections of the lower bowl with modern seating, sightlines, and amenities.
It also included replacing one-third of the upper deck with new seating and structure, constructing a new club level, and adding improved restrooms, concessions, and elevators.
A large plaza deck was added at the north end of the stadium, along with portions of the new Student-Athlete Facility (SAF).
Phase III (Planned):
This phase was intended to complete the reinvention of Sun Devil Stadium, including the east side of the stadium project with a new lower bowl, concourse, upper concourse, and club level.
The completion of the main concourse on the east side was planned to result in a 360-degree walkway through the stadium.
Other Renovations:
The stadium’s main concourse was extended to connect seamlessly at the south end.
New concourses were added and placed higher than previous walkways for better airflow.
The renovation aimed to transform the stadium into a more modern, intimate, and versatile facility.
Renovation Timeline:
The renovation began in 2014 and was planned to be completed in phases, with the final phase leading up to the 2019 season.
Stadium Capacity:
The renovation reduced the stadium’s fixed-seating capacity from 71,000 to around 55,000.
Naming Rights:
In 2023, the stadium was renamed “Mountain America Stadium” after Mountain America Credit Union secured a 15-year
naming rights deal.
