With the establishment of the Defend the Island Foundation, the Tasmania JackJumpers hope to give back to their community in the wake of their historic NBL24 championship.
Since head coach Scott Roth first used the term “defend the island,” it has come to be associated with Tasmanian basketball. The team is using its fame to generate money for community projects that will allow more Tasmanians to have access to basketball.
Players from Tasmania have a long history in the NBL. The current group of players that were born in Tasmania includes Taran Armstrong of Cairns, Chris Goulding and Tanner Krebs of Melbourne, and former NBL champions Adam Gibson and Lucas Walker.
JackJumpers CEO Christine Finnegan stated, “While we say ‘island defended’ after our championship win, the mantra extends far beyond the court and that mission is far from over.”
In addition to encouraging and assisting more children to play the game, our goal is to keep the community cohesive.
Fundraising is being done by the Defend the Island Foundation thanks to the introduction of the “championship wall.”During the 24/25 NBL season, the Championship Wall will be positioned behind the Championship trophy at the team’s home arenas. Afterwards, it will be relocated to the club’s envisioned high-performance center.
