For the first time since July 4, Joe Musgrove pitched seven innings, and the San Diego Padres’ Xander Bogaerts hit a home run. They avoided a three-game sweep on Sunday by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.
After being selected by the Blue Jays in the 2011 draft, Musgrove defeated his previous team 4-0. Though Musgrove gave up single home runs to Ernie Clement and Davis Schneider, he was solid, allowing just three runs on five hits. He did not give walks and struck out three hitters.
“When I play against the team that drafted me, I always feel like I have an advantage,” Musgrove remarked. “Even though I was never able to make my debut with them, I still wanted to give my all for my current team today.”
The Blue Jays were unable to complete a season sweep, as the Padres broke a three-game losing run.
Fernando Tatis Jr., the right fielder, provided strong defensive support for Musgrove with two outstanding catches. Known for his defensive abilities, Tatis made a sliding catch earlier in the game and a magnificent leaping catch to finish the eighth inning.
Tatis’s defensive performance was complimented by manager Mike Shildt, who described it as “routine greatness.” Tatis stressed how crucial it is to play solid defense in order to back up the team’s pitchers.
