Alec Bohm scored four runs and Ranger Suarez threw eight excellent innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Saturday night.
Suarez (5-0) struck out eight batters while giving up three hits and one run without walking. Eguy Rosario’s third home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs was the sole blemish.
After Suarez tossed 64 of his 96 pitches for strikes and cut his ERA to 1.32, it was the first run surrendered in 33 innings.
After surrendering five runs off of six hits and three walks in six innings, Dylan Cease (3-2) suffered his first defeat since March 30. Five fanned by Cease.
With just five hits allowed in his previous 19 innings going into the game, Cease was in danger right away in front of a sellout crowd.
With one out, Trea Turner singled. With two outs, Bohm launched his fourth two-run home run of the season to left-center.
It was still a 2-0 game in the fifth when Philadelphia put it out of reach. After getting two quick outs, Cease couldn’t find the third until allowing three more runs.
Whit Merrifield and Turner sandwiched singles around a Kyle Schwarber walk to fill the bases.
Merrifield was scored by Bryce Harper with a walk, and Bohm added a two-run single to make the score 5-0.
Suarez’s pitches were never very stressful. He spent the entire game working from the stretch to only two hitters. Rosario was the only San Diego batter to reach second base after hitting a home run.
Turner scored twice and went 3-for-5 with his 10th double of the year. Right now, he’s hitting.345.
The only other Padres players to manage hits were Jose Azocar and Jurickson Profar, and Azocar was subsequently picked off during Xander Bogaerts’ at-bat.
