The Journey quarterback Jeff Driskel was signed by the Washington Commanders on Monday, providing depth behind veteran Marcus Mariota and possibly a highly anticipated youngster who will be revealed later.
Another player that new general manager Adam Peters is well-versed in is 30-year-old Driskel. In 2016, the San Francisco 49ers selected Driskel in the sixth round, and Peters was their vice president of player personnel at the time.
It is anticipated that the Commanders will select a quarterback with a much higher choice, possibly No. 2 with LSU’s Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

Drake Maye of North Carolina and J.J. McCarthy of Michigan, who won a national title, are two potential candidates. Mariota agreed to a one-year contract, ready to play and/or coach.
The quarterbacks on the roster now include Driskel, Mariota, and practice squad holdover Jake Fromm following the trade of 2023 starter Sam Howell to Seattle. This week marks the start of Washington’s offseason training camp.
At the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis in late February, Peters stated, “You want to have the best competition and as many good players as you can to have the best team.” “A few years ago, in San Francisco, we might have needed as many as four or five in the end.”The Louisiana Tech/Florida product has thrown for 2,394 yards, 16 TDs and 10 INTs since making his league debut in relief of Andy Dalton in a Bengals blowout loss to Kansas City on Oct. 21, 2018.
Driskel has made 24 appearances for Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Denver, and Houston. In Week 18 of the previous season, when the Browns were certain of a postseason berth, he made his 12th and most recent professional start, completing 13 of 26 passes.
Olamide Zaccheaus, a wide receiver, and running back Jeremy McNichols were signed by the Commanders earlier on Monday. While Zaccheaus played for the Atlanta Falcons under new coach Dan Quinn, McNichols spent two spells with the Niners.
When structured team activities start in May and they have to attend a mandated minicamp on June 11–13, they will have a completely new draft class on the field. After adding 20 free agents who weren’t part of the squad the previous season, Peters will continue to restructure the team with Washington’s nine draft selections (two in the second round and six in the top 100).
