Should George choose not to exercise his $48.8 million player option for 2024–25, he will be free to sign with any team this offseason. The Clippers have till June 30th to get George to sign a longer contract. In January, they agreed to a $149 million, three-year contract agreement with Kawhi Leonard.
Swartz includes George’s request for a trade to the Lakers in his trade proposal.
“George should ask for a trade to the Lakers instead, as he has leverage and can walk out the door and leave the Clippers with nothing,” added Swartz. “LeBron James, who is more likely to stay with the Lakers, along with Anthony Davis and Paul George, would form one of the strongest Big Threes in basketball history, enhancing both L.A.’s defensive and outside shooting capabilities.
“The Lakers would still have first-round picks in 2029 and 2031 to try to fill in the roster around their stars. Trading George isn’t the Clippers’ first choice (especially not to the Lakers), but it would be far better than seeing the nine-time All-Star leave in free agency with nothing in return.”
