In 1996, Murphy debuted as a professional actor in the film Disco Pigs, starring with Elaine Cassidy as an Irish teenager named Darren. His acting career took off after the play, which was only scheduled to run for three weeks in Cork, Ireland, ended up touring Europe, Canada, and Australia for two years. Later on, he would portray the same part in the less well-received 2001 film adaptation of the play.
