It is far too significant for a humble, late-sleeping writer like me to interview Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk, after all, is the man who literally redefined skateboarding by shattering every barrier that existed each and every time he went on a board. As a child, I truly thought that he was the second coming of the good lord himself.

But I don’t have much time to let my misgivings about my suitability as a writer for this tale surface. Before I know what the heck is happening, I’m having a long talk with Hawk while he drives through Carlsbad to pick up his children from school.

Even though Tony has been a well-known skateboarder since the early 1980s, it wasn’t until over 20 years later, on a typical summer day in San Francisco, that his life took an odd and almost unanticipated turn.
