This year, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant did not advance to the NBA playoffs’ second round for the first time since 2005. According to Nick Young, the three players should work together. Young proposed that the three all-time greats join together for one final run during an interview on Vlad TV.
Many fans would like to see James, Durant, and Curry on the same NBA team before they retire from the game after they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs and Curry was unable to qualify at all. Though none of the three appear to be in a position to contend seriously for a title right now, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that they might win everything if they formed a team.
But I don’t see it occurring. I don’t see how they manage to acquire both James and Durant, but the Golden State Warriors would be the franchise for all of them to unite around.
LeBron could become a free agency this summer and has a $51.4 million player option for 2024–2025; however, the Warriors do not have the cap space to offer him a big contract. That option is also nonexistent because the 39-year-old has demonstrated over the past ten or so years that he is not interested in accepting a pay decrease.
If LeBron decides to opt out, the Warriors’ only remaining option would be to get him through a sign-and-trade, which would leave them without the necessary assets to acquire Durant. The 35-year-old will not be cheap; in 2023–24, he averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game for the Phoenix Suns.
I think Golden State could potentially land one of these two if they decide to go all in, but just not both. While that is a pity, we’ll at least get to see them play together for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
