In the men’s free skate on Saturday, American Nathan Chen scored five quadruple leaps to surpass Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu and win the world championship for the third time in a row.
Starting the day in third place, Chen executed his routine flawlessly, scoring 222.03 for a total score of 320.88, putting pressure on the Japanese duo of Hanzu and Kagiyama Yuma, both 17 years old, who followed.
Yuma achieved a personal best of 190.81 for 291.77, but Hanzu, the penultimate competitor, earned 182.20 for a total of 289.18 after touching the ice after his first two jumps.
Chen added world titles in 2018 and 2019. The coronavirus epidemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 event in Montreal.

“I remind myself that I’m very fortunate to be here, and by doing so, I’m able to be much calmer.”
With graceful athleticism, Chen executed all of his quads, including a flip, a Salchow, two toe loops, and a Lutz.
